Meet Principal Ruth Peña

Ruth Peña is the proud principal of Milby High School, bringing over 20 years of educational experience and a lifelong connection to the Houston Independent School District. A graduate of Milby High School herself, Peña has dedicated her career to serving the same community that helped shape her own educational journey.

Her experience spans multiple levels of education. She began as a bilingual elementary teacher at Davila Elementary, then moved into secondary education as an ESL math teacher at Deady Middle School. She later served as an instructional coordinator at Lewis Elementaryassistant principal at Ortiz Middle School, and principal of Stevenson Middle School, where her leadership led the campus to remarkable success.

Under Peña’s leadership, Stevenson Middle School earned all seven TEA Distinctions and was ranked #2 in the entire state of Texas for closing achievement gaps. In 2017, she was also recognized by Children at Risk for leading one of the Top Gold Ribbon Middle Schools in the state.

Since taking the helm at Milby High School seven years ago, Peña has led the campus to a solid B rating, positioning it as one of the top-performing comprehensive high schools in HISD.

Peña holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Houston and a master’s degree from the University of Phoenix. As both a product of HISD and a Milby alumna, her leadership is rooted in service, pride, and a deep commitment to her school community.
